Middle School Prepares for Open House
When visitors arrive at Cape Middle School for the annual Open House and Orientation for 5th Grade parents and students on May 7th and 14th, they will be in for a treat. Festive balloons will mark the parking lot, and as parents enter the school through the cafeteria they will see a number of exhibits. Shere Kahn, the Middle School’s celebrated percussion ensemble, recently named Missouri’s Best Music Ensemble, will be performing. A brief presentation will highlight the school’s academic programs, including the school’s progress in math skills, which improved 13.4% in 2008, according to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
According to Principal Mark Kiehne, the evening will be both entertaining and informative. Parents and their children will begin arriving at 6 p.m. and will find ample parking in the lot on the west side of the building, located at 1900 Thilenius Street. After viewing the activities in the cafeteria, visitors will begin a self-guided tour through the two-story facility, including its 24 classrooms and numerous special activity areas. Teachers will be available to answer questions and assist with tours.
After touring the facility, visitors will gather in the gymnasium at 6:45 for a brief assembly. Cape Central Middle School presently has more than 500 5th and 6th-grade students enrolled, with plenty of room for more, Kiehne said. Parents and children entering the 5th grade in the 2009-2010 school year are invited to attend the Open House.

Shere Khan, the percussion ensemble at Cape Central Middle School, is composed of 33 fifth and sixth grade students who perform with drums, recorders and African xylophones. Recently named Missouri’s Best Music Ensemble, their repertoire is inspired by a variety of ethnic styles and the natural creativity of children. Shere Khan is under the direction of Pam Dumey and Janet Cannon. The group will perform at the Middle School’s open house on May 7th and 14th at 6 p.m.
