Graduation picture of students throwing caps in the air

Cape Girardeau Public Schools is introducing several updates to report cards this year to help families better understand how students are growing and learning at every grade level.

These changes are part of our ongoing effort to give families more meaningful feedback so parents and guardians can clearly see how their child is developing the skills that lead to success in school and beyond.

Connecting to the Portrait of a Graduate

Each update ties directly to the district’s Portrait of a Graduate, a framework that outlines the skills and qualities every CGPS student should develop before graduation.

Families will now see scores on report cards that reflect student progress in these Portrait of a Graduate areas.

  • Elementary students will see these categories listed directly on report cards.

  • Middle and high school students will see this information included in the comments section.

Rubrics Now Available for K–4 Families

For the first time, families of students in grades K–4 can view the same rubrics teachers use to score student work in each subject. This provides a transparent look at what students are learning and how their progress is measured.

Standards-Based Grading for 3rd & 4th Grade

Another change this year affects 3rd and 4th graders, whose report cards will now use standards-based grading instead of traditional letter grades. This approach gives families more detailed information about which skills students have mastered and where they may need additional support.

Part of the District’s Continuous Improvement Plan

These updates align with the district’s Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP) — the roadmap guiding all efforts to support student success.

Whether your child is in kindergarten or high school, the District's goal is to make report cards more useful and informative. CGPS is committed to providing families with the tools they need to stay engaged in their child’s learning.
